Frankincense: one of the most viable healing agents on the planet, not just part of the Christmas story

Imagine being able to use something that will help heal your body, without side effects. Without having to take something else to help with the side effects of the thing you took in the first place to heal. Those are the key findings in a systematic review of the effects of Frankincense: it can help fight things like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, osteoarthritis, and collagenous colitis. Medicine is fabulous, and extremely vital in many health situations. The problem is that a lot of the medication and treatments have so many side effects, that we end up having more medication and treatments to combat the side effects. Again, still saving lives BUT things are emerging that are better and without the nasty side effects.

Frankincense has been supported by research to do the follow:

  1. Boosting the immune system
  2. Fighting pain & inflammation
  3. Preventing & treating cancer

Preventing & treating cancer: AMAZING! Fighting pain & inflammation is also amazing and one of the pain reasons I started using essential oils and sharing them with my patients. And boosting the immune system, as we all know, helps with many common threats that people struggle with like disease and sickness. The cool thing about all three of these things is that they can all relate back to many things we struggle with on a daily basis and try to medicate for: skin issues, emotional issues, energy, etc. For example, treating pain can indirectly affect someones emotional state. So if we can start combating these little things with natural plant compounds like Frankincense, maybe we can help prevent the big things!!!

My favorite research to refer back to in my practice is Efficacy and Tolerability of Boswellia Serrata Extract in Treatment of Osteoarthritis of Knee – A randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial. In this trial, Kimmatker, et al., found that boswellia errata extract (the scientific name of frankincense) was effective in reducing pain/inflammation and improving knee function. There was no radiological differences after treatment with the frankincense BUT radiological findings don’t always correlate with pain! There have been many instances where x-rays have been taken showing degeneration in joints, with no complaints of pain. And x-rays showing no degeneration but pain. Radiological testing can be very helpful, but I’m always trying to educate my patients that just because an x-ray shows something doesn’t mean you’re doomed for life. So all in all, the frankincense was shown to be extremely helpful. Another study also compared frankincense + curcumin (what makes up tumeric) to a COX-2 inhibitor which is a common component of many anti-inflammatory medications. The frankincense + curcumin combination proved to be more successful than the COX-2 inhibitor AND did not produce any adverse side effects. THAT’S WHAT WE WANT!!

Frankincense Oil Uses directly from Dr. Eric Z:

To help boost immunity and as a cancer prevention technique:

  • Add 1 drop of frankincense oil in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (like coconut), and consume first thing in the morning. This is not intended to be a longterm solution and should only be utilized for 2-3 weeks at a time. Discontinue use immediately upon signs of adverse reactions.
  • Put 1-2 drops in a soft gel capsule to prevent esophageal irritation.
  • Add 3 drops each of frankincense and myrrh oils to a diffuser.

To address tumor and malignant growths consider:

  • Applying diluted frankincense on the tumor directly, and on the bottoms of your feet. 2 drops of carrier oil per drop of frankincense is a popular approach

A lot of the research done on Frankincense is currently through animal studies or human cell studies. The government is not 100% ready to support further studying of Frankincense, so we go mostly off of the research that has been done. Which I find to be pretty compelling. Plus, the most compelling in my opinion, is the many case studies and personal experience I’ve had with success with patients. Hopefully one day we will have more research to support the use of frankincense to start replacing many medications and treatment. For now, I’m gonna keep sharing what I have learned with as many people as possible, continuing this movement of preventive care and natural healing!!
